Meeting Marcus Miller

IMG 5580

I went to a bass masterclass run by my bass hero Marcus Miller. He talked about his musical journey, Sire basses, and played some classic Marcus tunes, including one of my favourites “Detroit”. After the show I had the chance to meet Marcus. I also  went to see his performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London a couple of months ago, which was the best live gig I’ve ever seen.

Boston - Berklee College of Music

In summer 2018 I visited the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA). I was given a tour of the college and a view into the lifestyle and recording facilities in place.

Montreux, Switzerland - Music Tour

Tour 2018 landed us in Switzerland. We spent a week on the road, playing venues across Switzerland and France. The temperatures soared high throughout the week and our tight schedule filled every second of the day. One of the highlights of the tour was our gig in Montreux, where the audience particular enjoyed the jazz vibe. The settings were also stunning, with the incredible mountain ranges and views of the great Lake Geneva.

Sire Marcus Miller Basses

I went to Andertons music store (, to check out the new in-stock Sire Marcus Miller bass series. On my visit, I tried the Sire Marcus Miller V7 bass guitar 5ST (Ash) natural colour, as well as the P7 bass guitar (4ST) in the swamp ash tobacco sunburst colour, and finally  the V9 4ST (ash). The initial impression I got from these basses, was that they were extremely well set up and were a very ‘perfect’ instrument. As a 4 string player, I had no trouble flying around the neck on the V7 5 string and the low B sounded crazy. Furthermore, the preamp sounded ‘fresh’ and very natural. These basses, aimed at beginners, would be entirely suited, as they are so easy to play. Therefore, for the price, these bass guitars are definitely the best out there, so go check them out. The Jazz Centre - NYJO Academy Quintet

Our quintet (now named Union Street Quintet) was invited to play at the grand opening of the Jazz Centre. It was a great chance to meet and play alongside some of the top UK jazzers including Digby Fairweather, Alan Skidmore and Simon Spillet.

The Jazz Centre has been set up to support the rich heritage of UK jazz and will be putting on performances, movies and exhibitions to celebrate all things jazz. More details can be found at

NYJO Academy Quintet - St Katherine’s Dock

This quintet was formed towards the end of the summer for a performance at the London Classic Boat Show. Despite battling with the wind and rain, we played some great tunes, and got a warm reception form the various audiences during the two sets.

Slovenia Music Tour

This was my first visit to Slovenia, travelling took about 24 hours by coach from the UK. We stayed near the border with Austria high in the mountains.

We played three concerts and spent some time in the capital of Ljubljana and the stunning Lake Bled. The incredibly hot weather meant our evening concerts went down well, and swimming in the lakes was the best way to cool down during the day!

NYJO Academy Jazz Ensemble - Hoxton Hall

We played our end of term gig at Hoxton Hall in London’s East End on Saturday 15th July.  The Jazz Ensemble opened the first set, playing some great big band arrangements to an appreciative audience. Plenty of great solos throughout the band, and a chance for me to stretch out on the Grover Washington classic “Mr Magic”.

The Acadamy Big Band (NABB) and NYJO London carried on the high standard of music in the second half.

Home in time to get packed for the Music Tour to Slovenia, leaving on Sunday 16th. More to come on that soon…

NYJO Academy Jazz Ensemble

A great gig in the bandstand at Greenwich Park on a hot Sunday afternoon. We played some jazz standards, some great latin numbers and finished with a couple of more funky tunes.

Good to play outside to a chilled out audience who seemed to be having a good time. We have been rehearsing for a while and it came off well.

Look out for us in Hoxton Hall on Saturday July 15th, details are here

Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2017 - Snarky Puppy Masterclass

After a fabulous masterclass with Michael League, Bill Laurance and Larnell Lewis from Snarky Puppy, I was lucky enough to catch Michael as he was leaving and get this photo. What a cool guy, and what an inspirational musician.
